This dataset contains a curated research corpus of 109 YouTube videos compiled for the study “Doing Memory on YouTube: Videos with Witnesses of National Socialism as Memory Media”.
The dataset includes the following metadata for each video: video title, upload date, YouTube channel name, number of channel subscribers, number of video views, video length, and URL.
The original dataset was created using the software Mozdeh. On 15 July 2020, the German-language search term “Zeitzeuge” (“witness”) was entered into YouTube, and the resulting search results, including the available metadata, were collected and archived.
The retrieved videos were subsequently archived using Mozdeh and Excel sheets. They were manually evaluated according to predefined exclusion criteria in accordance to the research questions. In addition to the search results, the corpus also reflects YouTube’s platform-specific recommendation structure. Relevant videos identified through algorithmically recommended follow-up videos were incorporated into the corpus.
To protect personal privacy, all names of individuals and channel names that either directly referred to a person or were suspected to contain a real name were replaced with the placeholder “[Name]”.
The original Mozdeh query file, including the retrieved video comments, is not part of the published dataset but can be made available by the author upon request.
