Datenpaket: European Nato Burden Sharing 1993-2022: New Perspectives

This replication package contains the data and R code used to reproduce the empirical analyses and figures of the study on NATO burden sharing. The analyses cover NATO members and European NATO members over the period from 1993 to 2022.
The package includes annual country-level data on GDP, population, military expenditure, and measures of exposure to Russia. GDP, population, and military expenditure data were obtained from the World Bank World Development Indicators. Data on borders with Russia and exposed borders are based on the CIA World Factbook and on replication material from Sandler and Shimizu (2014). All data files required to run the analyses are included in the replication package.
The R scripts are used to calculate defense burdens and different benefit-share measures, to conduct Spearman rank correlation tests, and to perform two-sided Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. The analyses compare defense burdens with individual and average benefit shares under different weighting schemes. Separate analyses are provided for all NATO members, European NATO members, and a specification in which France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are aggregated and treated as a single unit.
The replication package also contains code to reproduce the figures presented in the paper. The statistical test results are stored in R data frames, while the generated figures are written to the plots directory. The individual R scripts can be executed independently of one another. The README additionally documents the data sources, software and package requirements, computational requirements, and the correspondence between tables, figures, scripts, and output files.
