The dataset provided here was used as a reference dataset in the manuscript "NUKLEUS - A first kilometer-scale convection-permitting multi-model climate ensemble for Germany: Characteristics of the historical simulations 1961–1990" by Braun and Ehmele et al., 2026; available as a Preprint in Geoscientific Model Development: https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2026-2517
A) Original dataset: HYRAS-DE from DWD
This dataset contains a modified subset of the Hydrometeorologische Rasterdatensätze (hydrometeorological rasterized dataset; more specifically HYRAS-DE and HYRAS-DE-PR) version 5.0 provided by Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD; German weather service).
Please note that there are more recent versions of the HYRAS dataset available under https://opendata.dwd.de/climate_environment/CDC/grids_germany/daily/hyras_de/
For information regarding the HYRAS dataset itself we refer to https://www.dwd.de/hyras
The selected subset of the HYRAS-DE dataset contains daily precipitation sums and mean, maximum and minimum daily temperature for the years 1961 to 1990.
The original data was obtained from DWD in 2022 under license CC BY 4.0. Please note the license terms issued along with this dataset.
B) Modification of the original data
The data was interpolated to a rotated curvilinear grid defined with an approximate grid spacing of 3km for central Europe (CEU3) and height corrected (temperature data only).
Specifically, the original data was modified in the following ways:
I) Temperature data - tas, tasmin, tasmax
- Interpolation to rotated CEU3 grid via nearest neighbour remapping
- Unit conversion from degC to K
- Height correction assuming a constant lapse rate of 0.0065K/m based on the differences in the orography files corresponding to COSMO-CCLM (considered as the reference orography on CEU3) and HYRAS version 5.0. The resulting temperature deltas required for the height correction are provided in aux_files/delta_tas_NCOS02_HYRAS.nc and need to be subtracted from the interpolated files in order to obtain height corrected tas, tasmin, and tasmax.
II) Precipitation data
- Interpolation to rotated CEU3 grid via conservative remapping (requires creation of a grid descriptor file for the native HYRAS grid)
The modification of the files was performed using the Climate Data Operators framework, version 2.0.6 (https://mpimet.mpg.de/cdo).
